Do you take insurance?

We are a cash-pay physical therapy practice, which means we do not bill insurance directly. This is because insurance companies place limits on how many visits you can have, what treatments are covered, and how quickly you should recover. We believe none of those decisions should be made by an insurance company. By working outside of that system, we're free to treat you as a whole person, for as long as it actually takes to get you better.That said, we understand that insurance is a real consideration for many patients. We are happy to provide you with a superbill — an itemized receipt of services with the necessary billing codes — that you can submit directly to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many patients with PPO plans receive partial reimbursement this way. We recommend calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card before your first visit to ask about your out-of-network physical therapy benefits.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

No. In Massachusetts, you have direct access to physical therapy, which means you can schedule an appointment with us without a referral from your doctor or specialist. You can call, book online, or reach out for a free discovery call and we can get you started right away. If your insurance requires a referral for out-of-network reimbursement purposes, we recommend checking with your provider — but it will never hold up your care here.

What should I expect at my first visit?

A full body evaluation. We look at how you move, how you compensate, and what your history looks like, then build a plan around your goals.

How is cash-pay physical therapy different from insurance-based PT?

In a traditional insurance-based PT clinic, your care is largely shaped by what your insurance will approve. That often means shorter sessions, seeing different therapists or aides depending on who is available, a limited number of visits, and treatment plans built around billing codes rather than your actual needs. At Recovery Sports Therapy, every session is one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy for the full duration of your appointment. There are no aides, no double-booking, and no arbitrary visit limits. Your treatment plan is built around you — your injury, your goals, your lifestyle — and we continue care for as long as it takes to get you where you want to be.

What is a Good Faith Estimate and do you provide one?

Under the No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate before beginning care. This is a written estimate of the expected cost of your treatment based on your individual needs — so you know what to expect financially before your first session. At Recovery Sports Therapy we are committed to full transparency around pricing. We will always provide you with a Good Faith Estimate prior to the start of your care, and we are happy to answer any questions you have about costs at any time. There are no hidden fees, surprise charges, or confusing bills — just a clear, flat rate for your time with us.

Can I still work out or train while receiving physical therapy?

In most cases, yes — and we strongly encourage it where safe to do so. Staying active is almost always beneficial to recovery, and completely stopping training is rarely necessary. Part of what we do at Recovery Sports Therapy is help you understand what you can continue doing, what to modify, and what to avoid while you heal. For our athlete and active adult patients especially, we build your treatment plan around your training — not the other way around.

What is dry needling and is it the same as acupuncture?

Dry needling and acupuncture both use thin needles but are based on entirely different principles. Acupuncture comes from traditional Chinese medicine and works along energy meridians. Dry needling is a western, evidence-based technique used by physical therapists that targets trigger points — tight, irritable knots within muscle tissue — to release tension, reduce pain, and restore normal muscle function. It is particularly effective for stubborn muscle pain, headaches, neck pain, tendinopathies, and injuries that haven't responded well to other treatments. At Recovery Sports Therapy, dry needling is included in your session at no additional cost.

Yes. We've had many patients come to us after PT elsewhere did not deliver results. We start fresh and take a full-picture approach.
